Chris Marker – Trois Vidéos Haïkus AKA Three Video Haikus (1994)

$
0
0

A collection of three short ‘haiku videos’ by Chris Marker.

The first haiku, ‘Yanka / Tchaika’, shows the river Seine passing under a bridge. A bird in flight stays motionless in the air.

The second haiku, ‘Owl Gets in Your Eyes’, shows Catherine Belkhodja smoking a cigarette while a superimposed shot of an owl in flight fades in and out over her face.

The third haiku is a tribute to the Lumière brothers. In an homage to their style, Marker documents an event of daily life in only a minute, choosing to film work on the Petite Centure (a Parisian railway) in May 1994. Due to the work, no train actually passes and we are simply shown desolate train tracks, making the haiku a dry parody of ‘L’Arrivée d’un train en gare de La Ciotat’.

Quote:
DIRTY is the reincarnation of two girls, a bottle and one bed. Their bodies, hands and face expressions reach out in a refilm look.

Quote:
DIRTY was originally shot in 1965. The footage was found in a very bad state and ‘restored’ with all marks, breaks, dirt, etc. deliberately left in place. But this is not the only thing that makes this a ‘dirty’ film; we see two almost naked women in a bed, first drinking from a bottle, then playing with it and ultimately engaging in erotic play. The dirt marks, the grainy texture of the image and the breakdown of the continuity of the action give the whole film the quality of a highly charged erotic memory. It creates the effect of a dreamlike recalling of a scene with the dreamer’s freedom to re-run or pause on particular gestures and freeze certain privileged moments such as the caress of a hand, the bounce of a breast, a look, etc. The film becomes an erotic daydream, a play with sensual images retained from a scene witnessed sometime in the past.

Threnody is a somber but luminous progression through a delicate articulation of earthly phenomena… an offering to a friend who died. It is the second of two devotional songs, the first being The Visitation. These two films were preceeded by a series of Four Cinematic Songs: Triste, Variations, Arbor Vitae, and Love’s Refrain.

Quote:
Bricks are manufacured in Africa, India and Europe and used to erect clinics, children’s homes, schools and residential buildings. Harun Farocki observed the different steps of the manufacturing process. Bricks are cast, fired or pressed by hands, machines or robots. Depending on the country of production, this involves a single worker or a large group. The film’s title communicates a decisive aspect: Farocki merely offers material to the viewer, who has to draw the actual comparisons between traditional, early industrial, and fully industrialized societies himself. The brick is the smallest unit and the sole focus of the film. The interconnecting elements are title cards displaying some brief information about the place and the construction method. Another comparison is evoked: The smallest unit of the 16mm image is the grain. It has a connection with the pixel generated on a computer in Switzerland to represent a brick and also with the pencil drawing of a European architecture student in India. Analog and digital imagery are more than mere information carriers, they are part of the production. (Stefanie Schulte Strathaus)

James Benning – L. Cohen (2018)

Quote:
“Legendary avant-garde filmmaker and visual artist James Benning returns to the Festival with L. COHEN, one of the year’s most awe-inspiring and transcendent experiences. Benning has described the landscape as ‘a function of time’ and this film elegantly invites us to savour the relationship. Shot in a barren Oregon field, the film’s fixed camera presents us with the deceptively simple: canary-coloured jerry can, twin tires, some rusty barrels, abandoned agricultural machinery, a plain of green grass and overgrown hay, and faint, portentous details in the distance.

Winner of the Grand Prize at this year’s Cinéma du Réel festival, L. COHEN is essential at a time when time itself (and time with oneself) seems to elude under a constant barrage of distractions. Regenerative, contemplative, profoundly moving, and as challenging as it is soothing, Benning’s minimalist tour de force should be compulsory viewing for fidgety, restless minds. A long-time proponent of ‘looking and listening,’ Benning captures the ordinary in nature and reveals the extraordinary within, while paying homage to one of Canada’s most beloved artists. L. COHEN is a search for totality, as much as it is a meditation on the beauty and brevity of existence.”

Sportin’ Life is the sixth incarnation of the international art project Self, curated by Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello. This project is an artistic commentary on society while emphasizing the complexity of various individuals through the eyes of artists who evoke the Saint Laurent attitude of confidence, individuality and self-expression. The documentary is an exploration into the sources and personal history of creativity, the essential life of an artist. Raw and sharp, it has the feeling of a moment in time that is still happening. Abel Ferrara’s intimate and lush look at his own life, his world refracted through his art – music, filmmaking, his collaborators and inspirations such as Ferrara’s early works and his creative partnerships with Willem Dafoe, Joe Delia, Paul Hipp and the musicians who inspired this work.

Erik Løchen – Motforestilling AKA Remonstrance (1972)

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, while French Left Bank Cinema flourished, parallel movements flowered in other countries; in Norway, the trend enabled director Erik Løchen’s career to flourish.
Løchen had made The Hunt in 1959, a fascinating, modernist work that paralleled the better-known experiments with cinematic storytelling of Resnais, Godard, Antonioni and others. Løchen returned to feature films in 1972 with an even more radical cinematic experience.
The story of a film crew trying to make a political film, Remonstrance brilliantly captures the posing and grandstanding that sometimes accompanies political discussions around correct form in art, but Løchen goes his characters one better. He designed Remonstrance so that its five reels could be shown in any order, rendering 120 possible versions of the film.
Film Society of Lincoln Center

“We’re trying to make a movie which in every way refers as much to what lies ahead as what has already been shown.”

The popular cinema that flourished in Iran under the Pahlavi regime between 1953 and 1979, a period bracketed by a coup and a revolution, exists now largely on poor quality, illegal VHS tapes. From these grainy, illicit sources, filmmaker Ehsan Khoshbakht draws the kaleidoscope of images that make up his sharp, critical history of “Filmfarsi,” proudly “Filmed in VHS Scope.” Khoshbakht’s deep familiarity and fascination with this period of Iranian cinema yields a tantalizing array of film clips and stars but this extended montage essay is neither wholly nostalgic nor celebratory. A genre cinema that “starts at B and descends to the lower letters of the alphabet,” Filmfarsi, he argues, reflected the country’s “split-personality” back to an audience struggling to reconcile the internal social, cultural and political contradictions of the era. His typology of Filmfarsi characters and stories is a line up of mothers and whores, brutes and clowns, clashing in melodramas pitched to the emotional extremes. When the country exploded in the Islamic revolution, Khoshbakht reflects, “the cinemas were burned and their ghosts were let loose in the streets.”

Teo Hernandez – Cristaux (1978)

The tetralogy pieces are dominated by the concept and presence of death, foreclosure, fetal vertigo. As such, CRISTAUX is a real descent into an inner labyrinth, which we do not know if it is organic or cultural. At the same time, the film contains a dialectical break that initiates other semantic directions in Hernandez’s work. Under the influence of Michel Nedjar, the filmmaker abandons his traditional method of editing based on rushes. The operation is now completed inside the camera, filming. This more flexible way of proceeding (“the camera must become a second eye”) is already reflected in the clear openings of Lacrima Christi: the Christian myth seems to be on the way to exorcising. The pantheistic intoxication – close to that evoked by Nietzsche – seizes places, objects and participants.

Luis López Carrasco – El año del descubrimiento Aka The Year of the Discovery (2020)

$

In 1992, when the Olympics and the Expo at last presented Spain as an emerging new democracy, the de-industrialisation policies were met with riots in the southern town of Cartagena. The locals remember those days.

Luis López Carrasco was 11 years old when he saw the Spanish town Cartagena’s parliament burn on TV. A significant fact is that, now, those around him in his adulthood don’t seem to remember. With his second feature, The Year of the Discovery—a split-screen epic of 200 minutes and 45 characters—he tries to understand the economic, social and political events that led to it. Drawing on the testimonies by those who remember it, the film travels back in time to present workers and unemployed people, of all different ages, discussing at a café the various political and personal concerns of that time. Individual memories thus become grouped in a film-document for present and future generations, atoning for a collective pact of forgetfulness as recent as not even 30 years ago. What happened on an economical and political level is not foreign to many other countries: the Spanish liberal government pushed for an accelerated process of de-industrialisation in the name of a supposed economical progress, leaving the working class in distraught and the trade unions in despair.

That the viewer spends the almost entirety of the film listening to these more or less casual conversations, immersed in the interior of a café is of no small significance. A bold and effective storytelling choice from López Carrasco which mimics that original act of him and his co-screenwriter Raúl Liarte who—imbued in a remarkable spirit of civic commitment— interviewed the workers and union leaders who had rarely been heard before. A monumental ode to the role of cinema as an act of listening and of rescuing from oblivion what dominant History might not want to keep a memory of.

Synopsis

A painter’s journey into the source of his inspiration in the landscape surrounding him and within him.

Notes:

Shot on super-16mm film, this is an abstract exploration of the creative process. Starting with ‘Nainsukh’, his 2010 film on the eponymous 17th century master-painter, Amit Dutta started making a series of films located in the Kangra Valley of the Lower Western Himalayas. This film approaches another shade of the same landscape through the modernist paintings of Paramjit Singh, whose mud home-studio in the hills sets the stage in the film.

The film’s musical score is notable for Amit Dutta’s collaboration with Rudra Veena maestro Bahauddin Dagar.

Quote:
Authentically ‘New’ German Cinema, and, simultaneously, an archaeology of narrative film itself, Wyborny’s avant-garde landmark defines cinema as a ‘nation’ that has perversely acquired rulers, laws and hierarchies before it has even been physically mapped out. At first appearing to spin an elementary yarn of social organisation (the predictably fraught establishment of a rudimentary commune in the Moroccan desert of 1911) in the ‘authoritative’ film language of DW Griffith, Wyborny proceeds to break down that language to its constituent elements and produce fragmentary hints of alternatives. Structural film-making of a rare wit and accessibility results, with flashes of appropriate absurdity highlighting the redundancy of closed systems, whether social or cinematic.

In Manhattan’s Central Park, a film crew directed by William Greaves is shooting a screen test with various pairs of actors. It’s a confrontation between a couple: he demands to know what’s wrong, she challenges his sexual orientation. Cameras shoot the exchange, and another camera records Greaves and his crew. Sometimes we watch the crew discussing this scene, its language, and the process of making a movie. Is there such a thing as natural language? Are all things related to sex? The camera records distractions – a woman rides horseback past them; a garrulous homeless vet who sleeps in the park chats them up. What’s the nature of making a movie?
