Harutyun Khachatryan – Vaveragrogh AKA Documentarist (2003)

$

Originally, Documentarist was intended as a traditional documentary about a country that has to face challenging problems such as war, unemployment, extreme poverty, mass emigration, alcoholism and crime. Unfortunately, Harutyun Khachatryan did not raise enough state money in order to make the film he wanted to and therefore had to settle for a different project. Thus, he decided on a very unorthodox narrative strategy. By weaving together different styles, such as documentarist observation and docu-drama approach, he shed a new light on the complexities and challenges a director has to face in order to present a multifaceted picture of reality. Thus, by highlighting the moral ambiguities of the director, Khachatryan approaches the contradictions of a whole country. Shot in an amazing black and white with a touch of a silver tint, the film is an unflinching and painstakingly-crafted statement about the hardships of making a film that sticks as close as possible to reality and truth. An acute snapshot of Armenia shortly after the collapse of the USSR, the film is a haunting portrait of a country at a crossroads.

Described on its Kickstarter page as “..a satirical, experimental “Spa Western” set in Colorado in 1893”.

The narrative follows a group of 3 women who travel around the landscapes and strange towns of 1890s Colorado, originally looking for natural springs, but with various absurdist detours and side-tracks.

Not in popular taste or catering to a common sense of humour – as reported in the Hollywood Reporter:

Quote:
“Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn’s “spa western” is a wellspring of peculiarity…….

….(In summary) .. Two Plains & a Fancy is a cosmic joke forged on a Kickstarter budget. To paraphrase Jessica Rabbit, it made me laugh. “

Quote:
Four days spent in a studio working on a centerfold photo for Playboy magazine provided the subject matter for my film. The magazine itself deals with culture, cars, a certain lifestyle. Maybe all those trappings are only there to cover up the naked woman. Maybe it’s like with a paper-doll. The naked woman in the middle is a sun around which a system revolves: of culture, of business, of living! (It’s impossible to either look or film into the sun.) One can well imagine that the people creating such a picture, the gravity of which is supposed to hold all that, perform their task with as much care, seriousness, a responsibility as if they were splitting uranium.

This film, An Image, is part of a series I’ve been working on since 1979. The television station that commissioned it assumes in these cases that I’m making a film that is critical of its subject matter, and the owner or manager of the thing that’s being filmed assumes that my film is an advertisement for them. I try to do neither. Nor do I want to do something in between, but beyond both.

A FICUNAM commission for four directors, Liminal seeks to play with poetic affinities between film and music. Moving across aesthetic and generational differences, the film-makers explore this relationship through four distinct stories as to context and imaginary.

Within the category of world cinéma d’auteur, Philippe Grandrieux and Lav Diaz have much in common in terms of their affinities with radical cinematographic form: both are extremely inventive in their practical relationship between music and narration.

With La lumière la lumière (Lights, lights…), the French artist and director evokes the obsessive relationship between two women whose existence is kept by a lugubrious voice and by Alan Vega’s and Marx Hurtado’s famous Saturn Drive Duplex.

In The World is Cold, the Filipino director describes a young man’s life and his musical dreams intertwined with images of an erratic, phantasmagoric future full of obstacles.

Relying on an entirely different aesthetics, Manuela de Laborde and Óscar Enríquez, two young directors of Mexican descent, approach musical phenomena quite differently. Through chaotic sound textures, Manuela de Laborde takes us towards three radically distinct landscapes in her Azúcar y saliva y vapor (Sugar, saliva and steam) where subtle and sensual musical textures interweave with a leitmotiv in the background.

In Lady Lazaro, Óscar Enríquez employs opera singing both as a protagonist and as a supernatural means of spiritual healing for broken souls.

Quote:
“Das Kino und der Tod/Cinema and Death”(1988), is one of his ‘Cinema Anthology’ ,which was made by extraordinary Bitomsky’s voice and movement of his hands that turn over photos of murder in films. It’s ‘a film noir as a film essay which analyzes film noir’. When he analyzes classic films like Hitchkock’s “Torn Curtain”,Lang’s “Hangmen also die”, Siegel’s “The Killers”,Aldrich’s “Kiss me deadly”,etc, each viewer tries to remake the images that always becomes uncertain in the memory, with the movement of Bitomsky’s hands and voice as a detective showing photos of evidence of murders. There is an astonishing moment of new discovery of the image which we remember as a movement of the film.

From the DVD notes:
”A computer-created animation of high-speed stroboscope mandalas with molecular-like energy. The surprise of this film is the color produced from the strobing black and white symmetrical images. Done with an electronic stylus on a special computer at MIT. This film demonstrates the possible use of the computer interacting with the graphic artist.”

“Electronic-optical computer finger-painting. Laws of reflective mirror images. An interplay between drawing by hand and computer. Art form of the future – electronic calligraphy.” – S.V., not dated.

Jack Smith – Flaming Creatures (1963)

Part of the New American Cinema group in New York City during the 60s, Jack Smith’s flamboyant aesthetic can be characterized by a mix of baroque exoticism, gaudy costumes, and detritus salvaged from the city streets. Flaming Creatures is a non-narrative, Dionysian orgy, complete with wild dancing, gender bending, and a climactic earthquake. The carnivalesque madness of the film is reinforced by the chaotic density of its formal composition. Smith’s deliberate spatial disorientation creates a pansexual landscape of tangled body parts; just as the viewer is unable to situate the visual coordinates of the image, the creatures are unaware of which extremity belongs to whom.

Jean Genet – Un chant d’amour (1950)

From Amos Vogel’s Film as a Subversive Art:
Genet’s only film — hounded by the censors, unavailable, secret — is an early and remarkably moving attempt to portray homosexual passions. Already a classic, it succeeds as perhaps no other film to intimate the explosive power of frustrated sex; male prisoners in solitary confinement “embracing” walls, ramming them in erotic despair with erect penis, swaying convulsively to auto-erotic lust, kissing their own bodies and tattoos in sexual frenzy. In a supremely poetic (and visual) metaphor of sexual deprivation, two prisoners in adjoining cells symbolically perform fellatio by alternately blowing or inhaling each other’s cigarette smoke through a straw inserted in a wall opening, while masturbating. Like all of Genet’s early work, the entire film is, in effect, a single onanistic fantasy, filled with desperate frustration and sensuous nostalgia. In the end, and after many failures, some flowers — painfully passed from one barred window to the next — are finally caught by the prisoner in the adjoining cell in a poetic affirmation of love in infinite imprisonment.

A day that could also be a life. A young man who could also be an older woman. A nightmare that could also be a dream. In Tunisia, while it could also be somewhere else: on the border between the necessity and the fear to make a film, the necessity and the fear for the revolution, This day won’t last is a cooperation with a distance. That is how this self-portrait turns into a group portrait. Clandestine, but straight from the heart: an end that could also lead to a new beginning.

Joe Gibbons – Living in the World (1985)

An auto-documentary about a disenfranchised Everyman and his struggle to re-integrate himself into society. He fails and turns to crime.

Light Industry wrote:
“Former MIT professor ‘robs bank,’ films ‘heist,'” read a New York Post headline earlier this year. To the surprise of many who knew him, the man behind this double set of scare quotes was none other than filmmaker Joe Gibbons, long regarded as one of the masters of small-gauge cinema. According to this and other news reports, Gibbons had been caught robbing his second bank, armed only with a written note and a video camera.

Though little else is publicly known about the case at this point, even these few details resonate strongly with Gibbon’s body of work, leading some to speculate that this event may have been intended as part of a new Gibbons production. In more than thirty completed films made since the 1970s, the artist has played elaborate and brilliant games with his viewers’ sense of documentary reality, using autobiographical elements to build fictional tales, or, conversely, staging made-up scenarios in the midst of real-life settings. At the center of many of his films is “Joe,” a misanthropic narrator with tough luck, bone-dry wit, and dubious reliability, who seems to use his camera not so much to record the world as to process his own emotional states through a public medium. “I just can’t be that sincere,” Gibbons has said. “I really push things to extremes, but I try to maintain some sort of verisimilitude, so it might get taken for the truth.”

Joe Gibbons – Confessions of a Sociopath (2002)

Confessions of a Sociopath is a 60-minute autobiographical film on digital video and Super 8 film, conceived as a real-life version of Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape. In this film, Joe Gibbons plays a fictionalized version of himself as he discovers a roomful of Super 8 footage from his own life, detailing events he can no longer recall. This footage shows his earlier film experiments, his descent into destructive behavior, and his “bottoming out” on drugs and alcohol. At a certain point, the films are replaced by random photos, police records, and psychiatric hospital records. In the role of the narrator, Gibbons uses psychiatric terminology to describe his past exploits, as a way of poking fun at both his own misfortune and at psychiatry’s ability to medicalize non-conformity. Through Confessions of a Sociopath, the now-reformed narrator seeks to understand his life, and make amends.

Two women spend a weekend together at the North Sea. Walks on the beach, fish buns at a snack stand, mobile weather forecasts. Sky, horizon, water. One of them will soon return to her family in Argentina while the other one will try to come a step closer to the ocean. She travels to the Caribbean and the foreign makes her vulnerable. Then, the land is out of sight. On a sailing vessel she crosses the Atlantic Ocean. One wave follows the other, they never resemble. Thoughts go astray, time leaves the beaten track and the swell lulls to deep sleep. The sea takes over the narration. And when the other one reappears in it, the wind is still in her hair while the ground beneath her feet is solid. She returns and the one of them could ask: “Have you changed?”
